BEIJING: China has launched the first self-developed nuclear reactor, the Hualong One. This is according to the release by CNA on Saturday evening, November 28, 2020.
China's nuclear reactor is a major first step in reducing China's reliance on the West for energy security and other complex technologies.
According to the China National Nuclear Cooperation (CNNC), the Hualong One nuclear reactor has been in operation since Friday, generating 10,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. It is also in line with China's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions to 8.16 billion tons.
Foreign nuclear power plants supplied less than 5 percent of China's total energy consumption in 2019. Hualong One is a new step that allows China to break the monopoly of foreign nuclear companies and aims to reduce its carbon emissions.
